Meet your Farmer – short documentary series

This is a self funded project that we’ve really taken to heart as a way to educate the public on the real life story of the local farmer. Getting the word out is currently a major focus for us as we increase our involvement and commitment to the movements to buy local organic food and to preserve farmland. What actually goes on behind the scenes before you buy that tasty apple at the market? The truth is eye opening and it is something that needs to be known.

Working in the fields

Why did we feel the need to get involved?
We felt like we needed to get involved because not enough people understand the huge effect this issue has on them. Moreover, they have such an opportunity to make smarter buying choices that directly benefit their own health, environment and local economy – they just have to be aware! This is an issue that touches on the environmental sustainability of our practices as a society. Our hope is that after watching the series, more people will know that they can make very positive impacts to the farmers, the local economy and for the environment with only small changes to their daily routines.

How are we telling the story?
At the beginning, we came into this project without any background knowledge in the area of farming. We were lay people when it came to the life of a farmer. As a story teller, this is the perfect position to be in because we are the best people to explain the story and the subject to people like ourselves…other lay people. By virtue of our unfamiliarity with the subject, we have the ability to simplify and convey the message in simple terms so that everybody can relate at a basic level.

What will the series cover?
The series will cover a diverse sample of farmers, in and around Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, and will showcase just how much goes into the “farming” process. We will also cover topics such as GMOs, seed preservation, CSAs and many others. Viewers can follow the process all the way from the fields to the Farmers Markets where they buy the final product. It is through this educational process that we hope to change perceptions and get the public to buy local, even if it’s just one seasonal item. We also hope to work on ways to help the growth of urban farming – planting vegetable gardens on unused land and urban space in a sustainable way.

How will this series be used?
When completed, the series will be able to educate the public as to why it is crucial to support and buy local organic food where possible. This series will be a welcome addition to local farmer’s websites as well as supporting organizations like the Farmers Markets around Greater Vancouver. It will also be available to local educators involved with youth.
